Prohormones: What Should I Use for Liver Support While ‘On Cycle’?

Here at PHE we get asked a lot of questions. And so we’re starting to turn these into blog posts so that we can share the knowledge with others who might need it. So this latest question goes as follows:

“When I’m on a prohormone cycle, what liver support products should I be using?”

This is a really smart question. It’s smart because whoever asked it is thinking big picture. It shows that you’re not just thinking about how to get big or hit that deadlift PR. You are also thinking about your body and your long term health. As someone in a movie once said:

If you haven’t got your health, you haven’t got anything.

We’ve written articles on cycle support supplements  and why you should be thinking about cycle support when using prohormone supplements responsibly and safely.

So I’m not going to go over that old ground again. But instead I want to focus in on this specific question – what liver support supplements are out there?

Liver support is an important part of prohormone supplementation. Some prohormones are mild and can have limited side effects. Others are stronger and need careful handling.

Remember, none of this is medical advice and you should always take supplements under the advice of a medical professional.

1. An ‘All in One’ Liver Support

Smart men use an all in one liver support supplement when ‘On cycle’ with oral prohormones. This will contain a variety of supplements, amino acids and other compounds which have been shown in studies to support healthy liver function.

A couple of ingredients to look out for are:

Choline: This is an amino acid which is pretty important for liver function and particularly detoxification. That’s attractive for an on cycle liver support product as it’s the toxicity of the prohormone supplements leaving the body that can give you problems (swelling, pain or in serious cases, jaundice). Although Choline is found naturally in foods, a product that gives you a boost of the stuff while on cycle is a must.

N-Acetylecysteine: I’ll level with you – if you take oral prohormones, then this stuff should be on your shopping list. A study in Hepatitis Monthly (yes that’s a real publication) reported that N-Acetylecysteine gave patients with non alcoholic liver disease an improvement in symptoms. The studies involved a reasonably high dose of 600mg in a 12 hour period.

A liver support supplement with Choline and N-Acetylecysteine is a real consideration while ‘on cycle’.

Higher Nature’s Smart Liver Support (available in the UK and Europe) has a range of ingredients including those I’ve listed above. Get it here.

2. A Milk Thistle Supplement

Don’t let the slightly effeminate name put you off – milk thistle is a power force in protecting your liver from toxicity coming from oral prohormone use.

Milk thistle is a herbal supplement often marketed as a detox or hangover cure. But that’s not what we’re talking about here (pro-tip – Don’t drink and take prohormones. That’s all kinds of stupid and your liver will hate you.)

Milk thistle has long been used as a natural remedy for liver disease and dysfunction. Sure, the science backing it might not be great but that doesn’t mean you throw the baby out with the traditional medicine bathwater.

I like to take milk thistle as part of my liver support stack – 500mg per day is normally enough. It can be bought affordably over the counter or on the web.

Buy Higher Nature Milk Thistle – £5.55 for 30 caps.

Conclusions: What Liver Support Supplements Should You Use On Cycle?

If you’ve been wondering this, hopefully this article has given you some ideas. Principally it’s best to go for ingredients that have been scientifically proven to have positive effects on liver function.

But, milk thistle is so affordable that it makes sense to include it in your stack. The science might be shaky but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have a positive effect for prohormone users.
